definition, please.

ayyyye!

s0, I realize pretty much all of my friends in Texas have no idea what a LDS mission really is, so I thought I’d share to make y’all feel more informed as to what I am doing and why I am doing it!

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, every worthy priesthood holder is obligated to serve a 2 year mission, now, beginning at the age of 18. For women, however, a mission is not an obligation but an opportunity, and they serve at the beginning of age 19 for a total of 18 months. The main goal of a mission is to “invite others to come unto Christ by helping them receive the restored gospel through faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, repentance, baptism, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end.” “We affirm that missionary work is a priesthood duty—and we encourage all young men who are worthy and who are physically able and mentally capable to respond to the call to serve. Many young women also serve, but they are not under the same mandate to serve as are the young men.” (Thomas S. Monson, “Welcome to Conference,” Liahona, November 2012, 4). I posted the video of this in my first blog post!

“Missionary work is the lifeblood of the Church and the lifesaving blessing to all who accept its message.”

-Ronald A Rasband : The Divine Call of a Missionary

All prospective missionaries turn in applications to Church headquarters and they receive a call to a specific mission around the world. Every missionary who is called and assigned or reassigned to a particular mission is called by revelation through the Lord’s servants, the prophets. A member of the Quorum of the Twelve assigns prospective missionaries to one of more than three hundred missions of the Church. These prophets carefully ask the Lord to bless them to know where the missionaries should be assigned. It truly comes from God. They spend a few weeks in a training center where some of them learn a new language and all of them rigorously study and practice teaching the gospel. Then they set off to their assigned locations and begin their service. Missionaries’ lives are completely dedicated to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. They pay their own way and put off school, dating and work for two years in order to focus entirely on doing the Lord’s work.

Also thought I would share my favorite scriptures about sharing the gospel:

D&C 18:15-19, 28

15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one asoul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!

16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the akingdom of my Father, how great will be your bjoy if you should bring many csouls unto me!

17 Behold, you have my gospel before you, and my rock, and myasalvation.

18 aAsk the Father in my bname in faith, believing that you shall receive, and you shall have the Holy Ghost, which manifesteth all things which are cexpedient unto the children of men.

19 And if you have not afaithbhope, and ccharity, you can do nothing.

28 And if they desire to take upon them my name with full purpose of heart, they are called to go into all the aworld to preach my bgospel unto cevery creature.
